Annelies Howell
BIOGRAPHY
Annelies began performing at Open Mic nights at the Memorial Union and local coffee houses in the early 90's. She's been a member of The German Art Students since 1997. Rolling Stone called The German Art Students "New Wave Weirdos." They won two Madison Area Music Association Awards for 2015: Rock Performer and Rock Album (Time Machine). They took home Alternative Performer in 2016, Rock Performer in 2017 and Hard Rock/Punk song of the year in 2021 for "Bands Playing for Other Bands." Annelies was named MAMA Bass Player of the Year in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023.
As a member of Gold Dust Women, she's paid tribute to Fleetwood Mac and Heart at venues like the Al Ringling Theater and Orton Park Fest. She's also been a member of a variety of tribute bands honoring Boston, REM, Garbage, Hole, The New Pornographers, The Pretenders, Alanis Morrisette, Aimee Mann, The Indigo Girls, Ani DiFranco, and Culture Club. With The Fauxtons and Max Capacity and the Sellouts, she and her bandmates bring back the 80's - often for a good cause. As a band coach and bass instructor at Girls Rock Camp Madison, she has honed her inclusive teaching practices since 2014.
